Block Unwanted Software

Oversight software from Tangram Enterprise Solutions is available to deny access and permanently disarm the execution of every type of software file or application. Blocking  includes viruses and worms, file sharing programs and spyware, unmonitored or unapproved instant messaging applications, and illegal music and movie players. It also targets unapproved, illegal software that violates corporate desktop or network standards.

To block access to a particular file or program, a Policy Management Console is used to select a predefined "policy" (rule) or define a new policy, which includes control options over execution, rename, copy, delete and read access. The IT manager can then identify the target computers and create customizable end-user and system messages. The manager then pushes the policies throughout the enterprise and monitors the progress of distribution from any secure enterprise location worldwide.

"Businesses today are faced with an overwhelming array of attacks on their networks, from outside and inside," says Ron Nabors, Tangram's senior vice president and chief marketing officer. "Tangram users can now significantly reduce business and security risks, legal exposure and downtime by exploiting OverSight's unique capabilities to block any and all unwanted software files and applications from their entire network, regardless of the size or geography or complexity."

Welcome to Wi-Fi World

A recent Time magazine article dealt with the evolution of wireless technology and how it is starting to be incorporated into the everyday life of the average consumer. The article had a section devoted to the various gadgets and gizmos that are being launched to provide consumers with wireless access using Wi-Fi technology to many of the devices they use every day.

While many tend to think about wireless as connecting your laptop to the Internet with no cables at Starbucks, there is much more we can expect in the very near future.

  • Microsoft has developed a wireless hub for its Xbox game console that allows you to jump online and compete against other players from anywhere in the house.

  • HP has developed a wireless printer/scanner/fax machine that does not require a USB port or any other connection to a PC.

  • Creative Soundblaster has developed a wireless MP3 adapter for your stereo that reads the files sitting on your PC.

  • Then, there is a wireless picture frame from Wallflower systems that rotates photos from your computer in much the same fashion as screensaver does, but the frame is on the wall.

Interactive Associations Create 'Email Marketing Pledge'

While state and federal agencies wrestle with the issue of spam, three interactive associations -- The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), The Network Advertising Initiative's Email Service Provider Coalition (ESPC) and TRUSTe -- have joined together to compile a concise set of e-mail marketing guidelines called the "Email Marketing Pledge." By requiring informed consent before sending email, the pledge aims to increase industry accountability by creating a distinct line between spam and legitimate email marketing, according to the three organizations, which represent a combined membership of 1,509 interactive leaders.

"New media marketing requires a higher level of consent and consumer control than traditional direct mail, telemarketing and door-to-door channels," says Trevor Hughes, executive director, ESPC. "Through our work with TRUSTe and IAB, the interactive media industry is drawing a clear line as to what is appropriate in e-mail marketing by developing the high-water mark for guidelines."

The Public Bath?

In ancient times, public baths were places that men of learning and curiosity gathered to exchange ideas. Today those places no longer exist (unless you count hot tubs), so we've tried to adapt the bath's open freewheeling tone into a newsletter. We hope you'll read our Public Bath in just that spirit.

The Public Bath is not "first-thing-on-Monday" reading. Rather, it is more like "fifteen-minutes-till lunch on Friday" or, "on hold" reading. Some material is amusing, some sociological, some newsy and we hope -- all thought-provoking.

We also want to answer your questions and hear your reactions. Have a topic you would like us to explore? Let us know that too. After all, public baths are places for both listening and talking.
